What is Acupuncture and How Does it Work?

What is Acupuncture and How Does it Work?

Acupuncture activates your body’s self-healing systems by eliciting a neurotransmitter response. Think about when you get a cut or scrape, you may notice the site of the injury immediately becoming inflamed or red, this is due to blood rushing to the area, or vasodilating, to help repair damaged tissue and fight off bacteria. This is why acupuncture can address so many different conditions — everything from irritable bowel syndrome to back pain to side effects of chemotherapy. The body is activating its capacity to self-heal.

If you receive acupuncture for pain relief, you’ll notice your pain dissipates, as well as other side effects, like heartburn or migraines, may also go away. Acupuncture utilizes the body’s ability to self-heal through a complex system known as the meridians. When the meridians are weak or deficient, illness can arise. Chinese medicine looks at the health of your whole body and addresses the root of the disharmony, while working to correct the root cause and bring the body back to a state of balance. Abby fuses this ancient wisdom with current biomedical knowledge in anatomy and physiology. She uses motor points of muscles to release them; this technique is referred to as “dry needling.” She can relax trigger points, innervate nerves, and use the body’s self healing mechanism with neurofunctional acupuncture. Abby’s treatments blend the best of western and eastern healing modalities to help you feel your best.

About Dry Needling
Dry needling is a minimally invasive treatment that uses thin, solid needles to target myofascial trigger points. Trigger points are taut bands of muscle that can cause pain, tenderness, and limited range of motion. Dry needling works by stimulating the muscles and connective tissue by releasing trigger and motor points  that cause pain and tenderness. Some examples of pain elicited by a trigger point are headaches, muscle spasms and tension, and plantar fasciitis.
